We started back up at Helping Hands this Tuesday (January 6) after the Christmas holiday.
We had three new students (two girls and one boy). Two of them had never sewn before, but all three took to sewing like a duck to water. They learned the mechanics of the sewing machines and picked out their fabric strips for their pillow tops. They all completed the entire top project Tuesday evening and will quilt them and sew the pillow cover backs to the quilted tops (we have the batting and muslin ready) during our next session (January 20). Our goal is to have them complete a project in two sessions, enabling us to reach a greater number of students, as well as keeping them focused on their project.
One of our former students, Katarina, has been coming to the sessions to mentor the other students. She was so excited to show us her Christmas present, a brand new Brother sewing machine, as well as a snazzy rolling sewing machine tote bag. She is now planning and designing her third quilt to present to her Grandmother!
